Upper Cook Inlet Commercial Fishing Announcement No. 30 - August 7, 2026
Effective 7:00 a.m. Monday August 10, 2026, drift gillnet fishing in the Upper Cook Inlet Central District is restricted to Areas 3 and 4 only, open Mondays and Thursdays from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. until further notice. This restriction was triggered because sockeye salmon harvest on August 3 and August 6 each fell below one percent of the season's total drift gillnet sockeye harvest for two consecutive periods. This schedule will remain in place for the remainder of the UCI salmon season unless changed by emergency order.

The Eshamy District north of Loomis Creek opens for both drift and set gillnet for a 12-hour period starting at 8:00 am on Monday, August 10, with the AGZ open to drift gillnet permit holders only. PWS purse seine fisheries remain closed, with a possible wild-stock opening as early as Monday, August 10, area and time to be announced Sunday, August 9. In the General Subdistrict, fishermen are limited to one set gillnet per permit, no more than 35 fathoms. In the Eastern Subdistrict, the limit is two set gillnets per permit, each no more than 35 fathoms, with a combined maximum of 70 fathoms. The reductions are intended to conservatively manage commercial harvest of Susitna River sockeye salmon stocks and may be relaxed by subsequent emergency order if stocks show adequate abundance.

As of July 24, 2026, the total Upper Cook Inlet sockeye salmon run to date is estimated at 2.5 million fish, of which 967,000 are late-run Kenai River sockeye salmon. ADF&G projects the total Kenai River sockeye salmon run at 3.0 million fish, with run timing running 4 days late. The preseason forecast for late-run Kenai River sockeye was 4.5 million fish, meaning the current projection is well below that forecast. Based on this assessment, commercial fisheries in the Upper Subdistrict and Central District will continue to be managed under regulations applicable to runs of 2.3 to 4.6 million fish, with an inriver goal of 1.1 to 1.4 million sockeye. The department cautions that the current run tier designation may be revised as additional information becomes available.

The cumulative commercial harvest to date is 4,250 Chinook and 242,000 sockeye salmon, and the 0600 sonar count on July 15 was 385 fish. At the Coghill River weir through July 10, only 6,877 sockeye had passed versus an anticipated 15,524, and approximately 112,000 of the 228,000 broodstock goal have been collected at WNH. In the Eshamy District, the most recent 36-hour period yielded an estimated 12,600 sockeye, 22,700 pink, and 3,900 chum salmon from 153 deliveries, while Port Chalmers has a cumulative chum harvest of 407,000 against a forecast of 840,000, and AFK Hatchery has 163,000 cumulative chum against a forecast of 330,000.

This is Update 32, dated July 11, 2026, and is the final update of the 2026 Port Moller Test Fishery season. The Daily Catch Index on July 11 was 18, with station-level indices of S4 at 75, S6 at 71, S8 at 35, S10 at 0, while S2 and S12-14 were not fished; rough weather the prior night and morning limited operations. This is a notable decline from July 7, which had been among the stronger recent days with a Daily Catch Index of 154, and indices have been trending sharply downward since then, running 60 on July 8, 36 on July 9, 26 on July 10, and now 18 on July 11. The season-to-date mean station indices are S2: 8, S4: 41, S6: 83, S8: 94, S10: 97, with total season catch split 3,670 fish (54%) in the 4.5-inch mesh net and 3,080 fish (46%) in the 5.125-inch mesh net, and mean fish lengths of 510 mm and 528 mm respectively. The 12th and final stock composition estimate covering July 8-9 was released July 10, but no percentage breakdown was included in this update's text. Port Moller Test Fish Catch Update #29 - July 8, 2026
The Port Moller Test Fishery Daily Catch Index for July 8, 2026 (Update 29) was 20, down from July 7's index of 154, continuing the expected decline during the tail of the run. Station 8 posted the highest individual index at 81, followed by Station 10 at 75, Station 4 at 43, and Station 16 at 23; Stations 2, 6, and 14 were zero, and Stations 18 through 24 were not fished due to rough seas of 5 to 8 feet. Raw catches at the fished stations totaled 113 fish across both mesh sizes (4.5-inch and 5.125-inch nets), with mean lengths of 504 mm and 531 mm respectively for those meshes on July 8. The author explicitly cautions that the 5 to 8 foot seas made conditions barely fishable and likely biased all indices low, so the drop from 154 to 20 should not be read as a true measure of fish abundance for the day. Preliminary harvest from the July 6 36-hour period was 16,200 sockeye and 6,200 chum salmon across 205 deliveries. PWSAC has moved 5,429 of a 12,000-sockeye brood goal into the holding pond behind the barrier seine.
